2002 visit to Rwanda, Called to Witness
In the spring of 2002, I participated in a program sponsored by Catholic Relief Services. At the time I was my parish's youth minister. CRS offers a travel program for those working in youth ministry so that they can see and witness what this wonderful organization is doing in the field. I proposed, in my application, to create an exhibit from my experience. My paintings, drawings, collages and photos, along with text from my travel journal, was first displayed at the Albany NY Diocesan Pastoral Center in January 2003. I have shown it many times in different venues over the years following. In 2004 I created a memorial piece to honor the 10th anniversary of the genocide. In 2002, soon after returning, I met a genocide survivor who was attending college in Albany NY. We became friends and did several presentations together. Now the work sits in storage and has not been displayed in many years. I keep up with news on Rwanda and maintain a connection through a secondary student ( now a young woman) and a priest, that I met when I was there. It was a trip that changed my life in so many ways and the work that flowed from that intense week , I hope , has helped many people know more about this small African nation and what happened in the spring of 1994.
