working on en pointe project

| 17 February, 2013 20:48

So last week was very productive!  My design for painting the sculpture (en pointe) for the National Museum of Dance is approved. My sponsor is David Brause Realty. We will be honoring the past while celebrating the present with my renderings of the "old" and the "new". I'll be combining an interpretation of the Victorian era hotel,  The Grand Union Hotel, which was sadly demolished in the early 1950's, along with a likeness of the Brause Realty's building that is now handsomely built on that site.  The Grand Union was at one time  touted as being one of the largest hotels in the world ! I am looking at many old photos and paintings for building details and at the same time lamenting the fact that my husband and I are selling our own Victorian second empire beauty (and moneypit)  in just a few days! !!!   It's been our home for over  22 1/2 years, but its time to downsize and simplify...heavy sigh....but I do love the second empire style and the The Grand Union was a wonderful example of that style.

I've included a photo of the en pointe sculpture...all 90 lbs and 60 inches of it!  fiberglass sculpture

My 3 days in the studio this week comes to an end today! It's been very productive!!  I needed to get as much done as possible this week because on Saturday morning I bring in a  5' sculpture to paint for the National Museum of Dance. I don't know how many artists are involved but these pieces will be displayed this summer in Saratoga Springs. I can't deny that this project will be a challenge....but 1.I get a stipend,($$$) is a way to help a good cause  3. I get to do some shameless self promotion!

I'm inserting a new piece I worked on this week.....New painting of view of Hudson R. from F. Church's home,Olana....the view is a favorite of mine.

A resolution for 2013

I have 3 wonderful days this week that I can work in my studio. I drive 40 min. to get here, so tonight I am pulling an all nighter....with a few hours of sleep on our couch. I didn't want to break my focus on my work and this is not the first time I've stayed here. It feels great! I'm just about done with a painting on canvas 20" x 50" . In the morning I will be photographing new work for the website and for two shows coming up this Spring. Another studio member, Carol, came in tonight to chat with me about self promotion. This year we are going to rachet up our efforts to gain wider exposure. I've been doing the "research" and am trying to put together a plan of action for myself as well as my two studio mates, Carol and Chris. Our work is quite different but we decided that a group effort might keep us motivated and on track. No one has to bend my arm to go to the studio to create, but the self promotion has been taken care of when the immediate need arises and not on a regular basis. So I resolve to pencil in time each week to attend to the business/self promotion side of creating art.
